How Many LinkedIn Connections are Enough Connections - Career Pivot
What number of LinkedIn Connections are Enough Connections - Career Pivot Enough LinkedIn Connections? What number of LinkedIn associations do you have to cause the enchantment to occur? The appropriate response is ⦠it depends. It relies upon what number of individuals are in your specialty. In the event that you are in a profoundly particular specialty, at that point less might be better. It relies upon the size of the systems of your first degree associations. On the off chance that everybody in your system has a little system (under 10 associations) at that point you will require more. On the off chance that your planned customer base or the business you work in is enormous you will require more. Everything relies upon the size of your complete network.LinkedIn used to reveal to you the size of your absolute system. With the most recent variant, you can just perceive what number of first degree associations you have, which for me is 4,604. Particular Niche I as of late was working with a respectable man who was hoping to move into a particular specialty of scientific displaying. Looking LinkedIn utilizing 3-4 watchword phrases we discovered just about 3,000 profiles. We at that point began to discover the influencers in the business and associated with them. Next, we discovered individuals who were working in the business and had a comparative foundation. We searched out individuals who looked, smelled and posed a flavor like our customer. Look at my post on this point named Finding People Who Look, Taste and Smell Like You. The third step was basic, interfacing with enrollment specialists at target organizations. Enrollment specialists have enormous systems, and on the off chance that they are enlisting in a particular specialty, they will be associated with numerous in the specialty. While tolerating LinkedIn associations, you can be specific on which ones you acknowledge. My theory and it is just a conjecture in the event that you arrive at 200 associations you likely have enough LinkedIn associations with get the enchantment to occur. Tune in to the latest scene Talented Professional in a Well-Defined Industry Suppose you are a showcasing proficient in a very much characterized industry like money related administrations. 200 associations won't be sufficient to get you to the degree of perceivability expected to deal with your vocation. What number of? All things considered, certainly in excess of 500 which LinkedIn characterizes as the cutoff it will show. I suggest you follow a similar procedure as somebody in a specialty industry: Discover influencers and associate Search for individuals who look, taste and smell like you and associate Find enrollment specialists at your objective organizations and interface You should be progressively forceful in finding and associating with individuals. You may likewise need to be less specific in tolerating solicitations. My conjecture, and it is just a supposition, is that on the off chance that you arrive at 500-600 associations you presumably have enough LinkedIn associations with get the enchantment to occur. Specialist, Consultant, Coach, ⦠Individuals such as myself who work with an overall crowd need an a lot more extensive system that isn't anything but difficult to characterize. This is the reason I have more than 4,500 associations. A genuine case of this is theLinkedIn Profinder work. It needs to coordinate customers with specialist organizations by means of your LinkedIn arrange. As a specialist co-op, the bigger my system turns into the more individuals who will be coordinated with my administrations. I send not many LinkedIn associations aside from when it will profit a customer or advances my business. Then again, I get numerous LinkedIn association demands. A week ago, I was a backer of Product Camp of Austin unconference. I gave an introduction dependent on my blog entry Why Are You Not Being Found? Take a stab at Thinking Like a Recruiter. I advised each and every individual who went to my introduction to don't hesitate to send me an association demand however requested that they reveal to me that they had gone to my meeting in their association demand. Around twelve association demands have been gotten. I additionally asked them tolikemy FaceBook page since it was desolate. At the point when I get a LinkedIn association demand, I make a snappy evaluation regarding whether it is somebody who is genuine (not spam) and with whom it bodes well for me to interface. I acknowledge their ask for and send them a LinkedIn message: Dear [first name], I simply acknowledged your LinkedIn association demand. How could you discover me? Marc Miller Accept or not, the vast majority do answer. I get a noteworthy number of individuals who discovered me from a LifeHack.org article titled50 Great People To Follow On LinkedIn, No Matter Your Industry. My speculation, and it is just an estimate, is that on the off chance that you arrive at 1000+connections you most likely have enough LinkedIn associations with get the enchantment to occur. And youll without a doubt quit the place of employment youre in now (unless you get terminated or laid off). While there are billions of individuals in billions of various employments, new exploration shows that there are just seven different ways to leave a place of employment. Scientists Anthony Klots and Mark Bolina reviewed individuals who quit their all day occupation and arranged them into various styles. These are: 31 percent surrendered fair and square. This implies they advised their supervisors vis-Ã -vis, gave a letter of abdication, and observed standard stopping conventions, including giving notification ahead of time. These individuals additionally gave a motivation behind why they were leaving.29 percent experienced indistinguishable movements from above yet didnt share what incited them to leave their organization.9 percent endeavored to smooth their own progress out.8 percent let managers know ahead of time that they were hoping to leave their association. 9 percent werent open about their pursuit of employment with their managers. Here and there they quit through HR or sent an email or text over the weekend.4 percent quit without really thinking. This generally occurred in the wake of something upsetting or horrendous occurred at work. 10 percent were connect burners. These individuals didnt care about people's opinion of them after they left. Extension burners gave, obviously, a spur of the moment announcement periods. What does the entirety of this mean? Indeed, it relies upon whether you are the chief or the individual who is stopping. The two gatherings can gain from this investigation. Directors Can Learn A large portion of the drive slackers and scaffold burners revealed injurious supervisors. On the off chance that your representatives oftentimes quit without notice or go about as though they dont care about what you consider them, it could imply that you, the chief, are the issue. While horrendous representatives will consistently exist, if this occurs all the time in your association, its chance to reevaluate your own conduct. Ask yourself the accompanying inquiries: Do I yell? Raising your voice may appear to be a compelling method to get data over, however it makes your workers awkward. Do I treat individuals fairly? Is your closest companion one of your immediate reports? At that point you are likely rewarding her uniquely in contrast to different workers. How could I treat the last individual who quit? Did you make life a living hell for a worker who allowed a fourteen days notice? Did you cut her hours, or give her the most noticeably terrible movements? Shouldn't something be said about references? Did you tell future organizations that she was, to seek retribution for her abandoning you? Your different representatives notice how you treat others when they quit. Do I offer predictable guidance and guidance? When you dole out an assignment, do you return later and advise the individual to do it in an alternate manner? Do you desert workers and decline to respond to inquiries until the task comes up short? On the off chance that you addressed yes to any of the above inquiries, start there. Youre rewarding your workers ineffectively, and they are bound to stop, however they are additionally bound to abandon you when they do. Your business runs all the more easily when you get notification ahead of time of a firing worker, so reward individuals for telling you. Also, treat everybody genuinely constantly. Your proceeding with progress relies on this. Workers Can Learn On the off chance that youre the representative who needs to stop, the best conduct for your expert future is to give your manager notification ahead of time and buckle down until the finish of your business. Except if your wellbeing (mental or physical) is in danger, indiscreetly stopping or copying spans is certifiably not a smart thought. You may believe that you can sever ties all that you need since you don't need any contact with your previous manager until kingdom come. In any case, you dont consistently get the chance to pick this. At the point when you go after another position, the enrollment specialist can contact your previous manager with or without your consent. Most organizations need to address at any rate the HR office about each employment that youve had in the ongoing past. In the event that you quit without notice or accomplished another thing to cut off ties, the HR individual or your director isnt prone to state, Definitely, she quit without notice yet that was on the grounds that I was shouting at her. Nope, theyll simply state, Quit without notice. Ineligible for rehire. And, theyll leave it at that. Obviously, how much notification you give your director, and the amount you explain to him regarding why you are leaving relies upon your chief and the organization culture. In the event that your director is a twitch, saying, Im stopping in light of the fact that youre a snap, wont help you by any stretch of the imagination. On the off chance that your chief is an extraordinary administrator, however limited by organization approaches, saying, Im leaving in light of the fact that Im a superior worker, and the organization wont permit you to give me a fair raise, is an incredible activity since it gives your supervisor influence to help your previous associates once you are no more. You need to settle on this choice dependent on your experience of your chief and your association. Keep in mind, regardless of whether you have a twitch for a director, you allow the fourteen days notice to support your future and to facilitate the progress for your collaborators. However you decide to find employment elsewhere, recall that how you exit the entryway today can influence your pursuit of employment five years not far off. Questions to Ask At The End of an Interview
Questions to Ask At The End of an Interview Normally at the end of each interview, youll get the chance to ask questions to the interviewer. Many people dont pay much attention to this part because they believe it wont make any difference to the interviewers decision and feedback and they also have no idea about what kind of questions to ask at the end of an interview. However, its not always true. What I really want to suggest here is to take every opportunity you have to boost your chance. Remember that you only have 45min in an interview and theres no point to waste a single minute, let alone youll have 5min for questions normally. Some people may argue that it wont change the result a lot whatever you ask, but let me ask you: if something you only need to spend 10min to prepare in advance and it can boost your chance of getting hired by 5%, will you do it? What if you are exactly on the borderline? Here are several things youd better keep in mind. Remember theres no clear cut between good and bad questions, its always case by case. This post is sharing some general ideas and you should always adjust them to work for yourself. 1. Bi-directional decision I dont want to give you the impression that Im trying to convince you to flatter the interviewer. You should always keep in mind that the company hiring process is a bi-directional decision. You are evaluated by the interviewer in the interview and at the same time you are also evaluating the company. At the last 5min, you get the chance to ask whatever you want to know about the company and its better to treat this as a chance to evaluate whether its the right company youd like to work for. With that in mind, itll be easier for you to come up with questions that dont look dumb. Not only will you get more info about the company to make a decision from your side, but may also impress the interviewer. Shift your mindset and put yourself on equal footing with the interviewer first. 2. Do your homework You wont be able to come up with good questions without preparation. Spend some time to think about this as part of your preparation and you may also need to do some research about your target company. Normally you should have different questions for different company and most of the time it doesnt really matter what the question is about, it could be company culture, specific product details etc., but questions about fact that can be easily found online is more of a waste of time. So if you are really curious about # of employees, valuation, business model etc., try to get answers from Google. 3. Dont expect much from asking feedback Its fine if you ask feedbacks from the interviewer, but dont expect too much from this. In most of the cases, the interviewer wont tell you anything except those official replies. So Im almost for sure youre gonna get something like you did a good job even if you screwed up everything. Is my answer correct? is equally bad. Not only you can hardly get the real answer, but sometimes you may make the interviewer embarrassed when your answer is wrong. If you really want to know it, go back and Google it. Im not saying you should never ask this kind of questions, but they are no other than questions like How are you, and you wont get much from it. 4. Dont ask too many questions for HR There are quite a few questions that should be asked to HR instead of technical interviewers, but somehow they got asked quite often in interviews. If you are an experienced interviewer, Im pretty sure youve heard so many times of the following questions: When do I expect to know the result? Will you tell me if I get rejected? Salary related questions Most of the time the answer is please ask HR people. Sometimes its okay to ask one or two this kind of questions if you really care, especially for startups since probably the interviewer has the answer for you. But for large companies like Google, Facebook, etc., they have a very standard process and its a waste of time to ask these. 5. Company culture Apparently its very important to understand the companys culture before you make the decision to join (of course you should also get the offer from the company as well). So asking about company culture is a common good practice. I still remember that one of my Google friend told me that he was quite impressed when the candidate asked him what is one thing that made you feel someone is Googley. Its a very interesting question, first the candidate did some investigation apparently as he knew the word Googley. Second he showed great interests to the companys culture instead of asking those boring questions. Lastly the interviewer had never heard of this question before and he had great interests to think and answer it. You may not be able to ask this question as I believe itll be asked for a lot of times after this post. But once you are evaluating whether its a great culture fit for you to join this company, there will always be interesting questions to ask for. 6. Product Itll be very impressive if the candidate showed great interests and insight in the product of a company. Imagine that you were the interviewer and you had been working on a product feature for a long while. During the last 5min of the interview, the candidate asked you few questions about that feature and had a short discussion with you. He may criticized at few point or came up with some new ideas. Im pretty sure you would never forget this candidate for a long time. Not every engineer has great product sense, which is especially true when he doesnt have much experience with that product feature. If its your first time to hear that feature, Id rather suggest you not comment it at all unless you are quite sure about it. Instead, do some investigation about the product. Things will be much easier if you are their core users. If you are using their product everyday, you should come up with some ideas for sure. 7. Technical questions As an engineer, probably technical stuffs are what you care most. However, before asking your questions, do make sure the answer is not the top result in Google. With that in mind, its funny to ask what languages are used most in Facebook interview, but itll be much better to ask questions like I heard of Facebook IOS has around 18k header files, what is it like to be an IOS engineer and any plan to use Swift. Conclusion Id like to emphasize one more time that dont try to flatter your interviewer, instead treat this as a chance to evaluate whether the company is a great fit for you. Also spend some time to do investigations about the company and things you really care, just like the company spends effort and time to evaluate you as a candidate. So its your chance and take advantage of the last 5min. Where to find the best jobs - Copeland Coaching
Where to find the best jobs One of the first questions I often get is where to find the best jobs. Job seekers want to know where to look. With so many sites available, its hard to know where to begin. You can spend hours and days bouncing around between various sites. To make things a bit faster, Ive compiled my list of recommendations. Here are a few of my favorite sites to find job postings: CopelandCoaching.com Of course, Im a little biased. But, each day, I feature two jobs Ive found through various sources (the hiring manager, a recruiter, a job website, etc.). I select interesting jobs that are newly posted and are at reputable companies. If you want to save a little time, be sure to keep an eye on these postings each day. Indeed.com Indeed is the #1 job site worldwide. It works like a job search engine, pulling in results from many different websites. They have over 140 million visitors per month from over 50 countries and 28 languages. Their site covers 94% of global GDP. That means there are very few jobs that dont end up on Indeed. You can even setup job alerts, and Indeed will e-mail you when jobs come up that match your requirements. Be sure to check it out, and to learn more, listen to last weeks podcast when I interview Mike Steinerd from Indeed.com. LinkedIn.com LinkedIn provides job suggestions for positions that are similar to previous positions youve held. Although I find the total number of options to be less, they are more targeted. Even better, you can often find the hiring manager or recruiter on LinkedIn. And, many of the jobs have a one-click apply option that makes applying faster and easier than usual. Just be sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date! Glassdoor.com As Ive written before, my favorite feature of LinkedIn is the ability to research salaries. Employees anonymously report their salaries and you have access to the data. You can also research what employees think about a company and questions you may be asked during your interview. But, in addition to these great features, you can also search job postings. To learn more, visit the website and listen to another podcast where I interview Scott Dobroski from Glassdoor.com. Newsletters Occasionally, you may find an industry specific e-newsletter that shares job postings. These can be useful if you find a good one (or a waste of time otherwise). A Memphis newsletter that I enjoy is the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club e-mail newsletter. Subscribe to the e-newsletter here. In addition to job postings, youll find networking and volunteer opportunities. These are all helpful in jump starting your search. Whichever route you go, the most important thing is to check postings often, and to apply immediately. My recommendation is to check every job search site daily. Look for jobs that were posted recently. If you find one you like, apply immediately. But, in order to do this, you need to be prepared. Keep your LinkedIn and resume up to date. Also, have a template for your cover letter setup and ready to send. This way, there will be no delay in your application making it to your future employer. I hope these tips have helped you. Visit CopelandCoaching.com to find more tips to improve your job search. If I can be of assistance to you, dont hesitate to reach out to me here. Also, be sure to subscribe to my Copeland Coaching Podcast on Apple Podcasts where I discuss career advice every Tuesday! If youve already heard the podcast and enjoy it, please consider leaving a review in Apple Podcasts. Thanks. Happy hunting! Angela Copeland @CopelandCoach

The Shocking Way Men are Secretly Shaping The #MeToo Conversation
The Shocking Way Men are Secretly Shaping The #MeToo Conversation In the wake of prominent working environment lewd behavior allegations and developments like the #MeToo crusade, an abundance of research has come out to reveal insight into exactly how inescapable an issue inappropriate behavior truly is in the working environment, specifically. What's more, the absolute most recent research recommends that, while its a common event for ladies particularly, their voices are to a great extent kept separate from the conversation. The U.S. Equivalent Employment Opportunity Commission, agovernment office answerable for preparing inappropriate behavior protests, says that anywherebetween25 and 85 percent of ladies report having encountered lewd behavior in the working environment. About 33% of the 90,000 grumblings got in 2015 incorporated a badgering claim, and an expected 75 percent of all working environment provocation occurrences go unreported inside and out. Then, the Society for Human Resource Management has seen a spike in questions relating to in appropriate behavior from its individuals and, as a general public, were having a greater amount of the basic discussions on the topic discussions weve been pushing to have since the start of time. But the Womens Media Center (WMC) found that during a 15-month term, men have for the most part been driving the open discussions on sexual assault. On the one year commemoration of The New York Times uncover on the rape claims made against Harvey Weinstein, the WMC discharged a #MeToo report looking at the press inclusion from May 1, 2017 to August 31, 2018 (five months prior and 10 months after the Weinstein disclosures). Lauren Wolfe, chief of WMC Women Under Siege, co-composed the report that examined title texts, bylines and articles in more than 15,000 bits of news content from 14 of the countries most generally circled newspapers. We did a report on assault nearby in 2015, and like rape, we took a gander at media inclusion, Wolfe educated Broadly regarding how where the examination al l started. We were at that point beginning to do look into for how media was covering rape. So [the Harvey Weinstein news] kicked in at that time.Wolfe and her other co-creator, media examiner and information director at WMC, Eliza Ennis, found that, during the 15 months they checked on, men made up most of bylines about rape. Male names contained 53 percent of bylines, in this manner recommending that men have been molding the national discussion. Notwithstanding being unfavorably influenced by sexual savagery, ladies had six percent less bylines than men over the exploration time frame. In addition, notwithstanding the way that ladies of shading experience higher paces of sexualized brutality than their white partners, their accounts are frequently absent from inclusion entirely. We did see a quantifiable contrast in the quantity of bylines that went to ladies on rape inclusion throughout the months, Wolfe told Broadly. What was truly intriguing, at any rate, in this investigation , and I would accept it remains constant here, ladies would in general address a larger number of ladies as sources than men. Men addressed more men; ladies address more women. The explore doesnt come as a very remarkable surprise.According to The Status of Women in the U.S. Media 2017 Report by the WMC, ladies get only 38 percent of bylines and different credits in print, web, TV and wire news. Concerning points relating to ladies, for example, conceptive issues and grounds rape female writers guarantee only 37 percent and 31 percent of stories, individually. Moreover, ladies arent cited as sources almost as frequently as men, even on issues that to a great extent influence them; for instance, of the 12 outlets WMC examined, just three utilized more statements from female sources in their rape inclusion. At 36 percent, ladies are cited as specialists more so than earlier years (22 percent in 2005), however mens names are still ascribed to the main part of quotes. This is to a great e xtent an aftereffect of the way that 86 percent of American newsrooms are white with white men behind 55 percent of all outlets. The absence of female voices in media is an inadequacy that is negative to the wellbeing of our popular government a lack that eventually figures out what issues we talk about, who discusses them and, along these lines and above all, how we talk about them. Be that as it may, its up to the newsrooms to begin employing more women. The thought is that if newsrooms arent mirroring the individuals ... the manner in which society is comprised of various non-white individuals, ladies, a wide range of minorities, Wolfe told Broadly. On the off chance that newsrooms arent mirroring that, at that point their accounts just arent being told so a lot or perhaps even also on the grounds that you do have a personal stake in possibly LGBT issues if youre a queer. In association with The Female Quotient and Progyny, Fairygodboss directed a study of 400 people to get their pe rspectives on home and work, and found that 78 percent of men and 75 percent of ladies state the #MeToo development hasnt had an effect at their workplaces. Were consistently inquisitive to check whether whats occurring in the media really reflects what ordinary people are encountering, Georgene Huang, CEO and prime supporter of Fairygodboss said. While the #MeToo development has caught national consideration, our overview shows that there is significantly more work to do to have a genuine effect in work environments over the country. As it turns out, the media isnt continually reflecting what ordinary people are encountering and perhaps on the grounds that the vast majority of the media has been curated by a segment that isnt close to as affected by sexual viciousness in the first place.More on #MeToo:HerReport.org, and follow her excursions on Instagram @Facebook.

Stole the concept!) at another big company for my transition into my golden years. Got sacked by age discrimination. Saw it coming. But, was powerless to stop it. This blog post is your wake up call. You maybe somewhere on the wrong side of an age that ends in a five or a zero. Its going to happen to you you think. You need to adjust your thinking so that when it does, youre ready for it. I wasnt. Its happening to you, silently; every day you put foot to floor, it puts one more thread to your anchor. We all know that there is age discrimination in hiring. Hair dye, functional resumes, and dropping graduation years from school are all symptoms. You cant hide it. Career counselors urge your to turn a negative into a positive. Ever try to keep water out of a hole on the beach? You have to acknowledge how pervasive it is. I think I have some coping strategies; nothing to stop or prevent it. But surviving it! I was 57 when I came to my Last Company by selling myself into it. I found a strategic structural Information Technology Customer-impacting problem, and sold myself as a fixer of it. Pushed aggressively. I knew that there was age discrimination out there, but, despite being relatively financially OK, I wasnt OK enough to go 8 years without a paycheck until SocSec and Pensions kicked in. I NEEDED another job to bridge the time. I selected my Last Company for a high probability that I could spend 8 years there. My salary expectations were modest; I wanted time to bridge to retirement. It was a really screwed up; that Last Company. Be it incompetence, stupidity, or crookedness, I arrived to find the job I had been hired for was no longer there. Reorg! It was a punch in the gut. They had something for me to do. To help them out while they figured out their recent reorg. I say crookedness, because I suspected, but never could prove, that they had bait n switched me. If offered the job I was now doing, I wouldnt have accepted. But, now that I was committed, what choice did I have? The offers were not exactly rolling in for this Old Guy. I knew there was age discrimination out there. Remembering I was looking for a bridge, not a career, or a stepping stone, I shut up and buckled down. As a footnote, the problem I sold into to solve, I got fixed in about six weeks in my spare time. I milked that interim job for three plus years. And did a lot of stuff. Then, they had another bloody reorg. My boss, naive in the ways of corporate politics, took care of himself, getting what he wanted, and, inadvertently, threw all his seven people, under the bus. When the reorg smoke cleared, the other six were pink slipped. They were all younger than me. They had families to care for, lives to lead, and ambitions to fulfill. So they moved on. All I wanted was to walk the rest of my bridge. As a footnote, Ive talked to that fellow many times, and I think he was honestly fooled by the words in reorg talk. I think he felt bad. But, not too bad, he was happy with what he got. It wasnt him under the bus. I was the lone hold out. Remembering my goal was a bridge. I sucked it up and endured. Bungee managers, insults, and poor treatment. I was crossing my bridge. Then, after yet another reorg, I could sense a change in the wind. All the deadwood was gathered up under a new meaningless title. Org charts were produced. Promises made. It was a plain on the nose on your face. I was hanging out in the wind. One promise was that all the surplus would get first priority to interview for all positions. Lie! There were other lies and betrayals, but that was the first and biggest! A job, perfect for me, was filled, without them following their own process, without me even getting a courtesy interview, by a younger woman. She moved into my old office, as I sat in a cube outside it. My warning bells went off. I began documenting each slight, each failure to follow process, each pass over. It became a body of evidence. I kept my doomsday file in my car. I documented each age-related departure. It was obvious. Finally, my time came. My then boss called me to a meeting in a different part of the building. It was supposed to be a one on one. There was another woman there. HR. Position eliminated! I knew what it was. Be there, done that, had the t-shirt. I signed nothing and gave them notice of my intent to sue. I went from there, escorted out of the building like a thief, to my lawyer. Stopped on the way home. (Remember my file? It was in my car for a reason!) A flurry of activity to bring the lawyer up to speed. He thinks I have a credible claim. (What lawyer being paid wouldnt say that?) I dont want a fight. I want those three years. Well see if that lawyer can get it for me? So, dont cry for me (Argentina?). I write this for you to be warned. Showing Compassion To A Job Seeker
Showing Compassion To A Job Seeker Jacob Share, Israels most popular job/career blogger, had a good post a few weeks back about showing compassion to job seekers. Ive talked about this a number of times, in the depression post and the religions role in a job search post, in another post that I cant find, and in passing in a bunch of other posts. But his list (you can find it here) inspired me to create my own list. This post might come across as a little sappy, which is not my intention. But the idea of showing compassion indicates that there is something wrong, at a personal level. Here we go: Take the person to lunch. Buy the lunch. And make good use of this time. DO NOT preach. DO NOT dig. Dont try and find out why the person is in transition it just doesnt matter. I would even suggest that you dont have to help solve the problem with your tactics and techniques. One of the first lunches I went to was with a wealthy friend. I didnt know what I was doing, and it turned out that he didnt know anything about a job search. But I left that meeting rejuvenated. This turned into a one-meeting mentoring session after lunch we never touched bases again (even though I tried). It was just what I needed, helpful, non-judgmental, and with a big-picture perspective. I would suggest that the job seeker would either need that or tactical help. Best thing to do? Open up your little black book, figure out five professionals that you could introduce the job seeker to, and then do it that day. Be honest and helpful. Too many people have that nice smile with a look of pity in their eyes. The job seeker is already going through enough emotions to fill a room, and theyll probably read more into it than you intend. But there is a feeling of everyones talking about me. Sometimes it even feels like mans best friend, the family dog, will walk away when you (the job seeker) come in the room. I remember one of the most important phone calls I had was with Ed Ekstrom, partner at vSpring Capital. Surprisingly, Ed spent about 30 minutes with me on the phone. There was no role for me there, and my school wasnt ivy league, which meant he wasnt interested in me as an employee. But in that 30 minutes the honesty and guidance that he gave me was critical to help me understand how I (with my credentials and experience) was perceived. Dont try to replace Monster.com. Ive had people send me job leads they found online. The thing is, I was already spending 10 hours a day online, and knew about all the leads that were posted. The hidden job market includes all the jobs NOT posted, supposedly with 85% of the opportunities. If you have a way to help me bust into that hidden job market, please help! Cash helps, too. I always feel weird writing about this, as Im not asking for money, and your job seeking buddy probably wont either. My family was the recipient of two very generous gifts. The first gift was three gift cards for the local grocery store, maxed at $200 each. The second we found out about when we got a utility bill and found that someone paid it in advance for a few months. I cant even tell you how amazing those gifts were. When you get into a situation where no money comes in, and plenty has to go out, its very, very scary. How many months can we survive? Being on the receiving end of those gifts changed me as a person, and helped give a little bit of piece of mind to my family. A special note for the spouse. The problem, as the spouse, is that you are TOO CLOSE. Normally a spouse knows the personal weaknesses, doesnt understand the strengths, and is closer than anyone to the emotion. Thats why they say that a spouse cannot be the job search coach. I didnt realize this at the time but my wife and I did not talk for about the first month. We were trying to be strong for one another, and there wasnt really much to say that month. Realize that this is a very difficult time, but there are things you can do. One of the best things my wife did for my job search was to network with her friends. It was very cool to have her friends husbands get in touch with me, as that helped jump-start my networking. A special note for family (brothers, sisters, parents, etc.). This is tough because some of you are in a position to help, or family relationships have been strained for years. I wont even pretend to know the right answer for you, but I can share one experience. This is not the time for tough love. I was talking to my dad one night and he said I will expect you to be unemployed for at least six months. No way, I thought, Id have a job much earlier but just knowing that he was supportive, and helping, and not expecting results immediately was very, very comforting. As a side note, if you can help financially, nows a great time to help with car payments, house payments or some other significant bill. A special note for religious leaders and congregation members. Go read religions role in a job search. Additionally, realize that this is no time to judge or shun. No matter how good or bad the job seeker has been in your congregation, now is not the time to teach a lesson or turn your back. This is a very humbling time, and it can be hard for the person to drag himself to church, just to feel judged by all those people with a job. My religious leaders were awesome but after my religions role post I got a number of e-mails from people who had been shunned. Dont ignore this, if you are a church leader, ask the person to meet with you, seek to understand, and figure out how you can help. This is a great time to really love that person. So there you go. Again, Jacob has some other ideas, as do his commentors. That post was inspired by a group writing project by Wade of The Middle Way, Kenton of Zen-Inspired Self Development, and Albert of Urban Monk.Net. I havent checked yet but he asked a few others to participate, including Vivien, Pearl, Isabella, Miriam, Ronald, Vivian, Kate, Shelly, Robert, Pete, Carolyn, Jennifer, Yvonne, Etienne and Simonne. Im sure I missed stuff how can you show compassion to someone in a job search? Or, when you were in your own transition, how has someone shown compassion to you? Im sure I missed stuff how can you show compassion to someone in a job search? Or, when you were in your own transition, how has someone shown compassion to you?
